Why are my downloaded emails from Law App opening in the old Outlook?
Law App saves emails in the .eml format, which is designed to work universally across different systems, including Apple devices. However, if Windows is set to open .eml
files using the legacy (old) version of Outlook, that’s the version that will launch.
Why does Law App use .eml files instead of .msg files?
- .eml is a universal email format readable on both Windows and Mac systems.
- .msg is Microsoft-specific, and many other systems (especially document management systems) can’t read it.
- To ensure consistency across all devices and avoid compatibility issues, we save in .eml.
How do I make the new Outlook app the default to open my downloaded emails?
You can update your Windows default app setting for .eml
files by following these steps:
- Open Settings (
Windows + I
). - Go to Apps > Default Apps.
- Click on “Choose defaults by file type”.
- Scroll to
.eml
and click the current program (e.g., Outlook (Legacy) or another app). - Choose the new Outlook from the list.
- Done! Now
.eml
files should open in the new Outlook app.

What if I don’t see the new Outlook in the list?
- Try restarting your computer and re-opening the new Outlook once.
- Make sure you have the new Outlook app installed from Microsoft 365.
- If you have both versions installed, Windows may still prefer the old version unless changed manually.
Do I need to change the setting for .msg files too?
Law App does not use .msg
files, but if you work with other software that does, you can also follow the same steps for .msg
to set your preferred default.
