If you’re using a Mac and unable to preview or open some email attachments in Law App, it’s likely due to file format compatibility, NOT a fault with Law App itself.
Law App by default intentionally saves emails in the .eml
format, which is compatible with both Windows and macOS. However, issues arise when email files are uploaded from other sources using incompatible formats — particularly .msg
files, which are not natively readable by Mac environments.
What’s Causing the Issue
While Law App ensures compatibility by saving emails in .eml
format by default, issues typically occur when:
- A client provides a USB or document bundle with exported emails
- Emails are transferred from another law firm or system
- Files are bulk uploaded in formats Law App did not originally create
.msg
files are produced by Microsoft Outlook for Windows, and macOS cannot preview or open them without extra tools.
Here’s how to access .msg files:
Download the file from Law App.
Open it using Outlook for Mac (must be installed), or a third-party app such as MSG Viewer or Emailchemy.
Alternatively, ask your IT team to convert .msg files into .eml or .pdf format for wider compatibility.
