Why does the GST amount change when I allocate a receipt to an invoice

Contents

When you first enter a receipt in Law App, the system assumes a standard 10% GST. However, the actual GST amount is only determined at the point of allocation—when the receipt is matched to a specific invoice.

This happens because some invoice line items may include partial or no GST, especially when dealing with disbursements from suppliers like InfoTrack. For example, InfoTrack often provides a gross amount and a GST component that reflects mixed inputs:

    GST applies to service fees

    Many search fees are GST-free

Rather than splitting these into multiple lines, Law App displays them as a single line for clarity—especially for your end client. But once the receipt is allocated, the system adjusts the GST to reflect the actual tax treatment of each line item on the invoice.

Important: Always complete all allocations before running GST reports (for firms using cash basis), as allocations determine the correct GST amounts for reporting.
